[翻譯 Translation]後山的山/The Mountain of Hualien

  在台灣,「愛國精神」一詞很少被強調。但從我開始增加和外國人的互動以後,對台灣的愛與認同變得非常深。後來我發現許多台灣美麗的一面,我過去了解甚少。
In Taiwan, the word “patriotism” is seldom emphasized, while since I started to interact with foreigners more and more often, my love and recognition of Taiwan became very deeper. Afterwards, I found that I know few about many of beautiful aspects of Taiwan before.

  花蓮位於台灣東部,西臨為台灣主要山脈的中央山脈,東臨沿岸山脈以及太平洋。由於漢人臺開墾先抵達台灣西部,而花蓮與台東被山脈阻隔開來,故被來臺漢人稱為「後山」。
Hualien county is located on Eastern Taiwan, facing the Central Mountain Range (Chinese: 中央山脈), which is the principle range of mountains in Taiwan, on the west and facing the Pacific Ocean on the east. Since that the Han Chinese first arrived the western area and that Hualien and Taitung are isolated due to th mountains, the Han Chinese in Taiwan call them “houshan (this means ′the mountain behind′ in Chinese).”

  颱風經常形成於6月至11月,而因為地形因素,在侵襲台灣本島時花蓮、臺東與宜蘭往往是風雨最嚴重的地方。由於中央山脈的阻隔,人口稠密的西半地區受到的影響降低許多,但許多人卻忘了感恩我們這座後山。
It is from June to November when typhoons are formed usually. Because of the topography, when a typhoon hits Taiwan, Hualien, Taitung, and Ilan are often the places where the weather is worst. Due to the countercheck of the Central Mountain Range, the influence is not so hard in the populous western Taiwan, while many people forget to be grateful to this “houshen.”
  這首《後山的山》是兩位花蓮人組成的樂團湯姆與哈克為這重要的山所寫的歌,歌詞以充滿鄉土風情的台語表達我們對土地的愛。
The song “The Mountain of Hualien (Chinese: 後山的山, which means the mountain behind literally)” is composed for this important mountain by Tom and Huck, a band formed with two Hualien people. The lyrics giving a countryside image is written in Taiwanese (dialect) and conveys our love to the land.

    後山的山 作詞:黃黎明
              作曲:黃黎明

  風在吹 鳥仔在飛
Breezes are flowing and the birds are flying
  山邊有人在放風吹
On the hillside are somebodies flying kites
  日落山免著驚
But don’t worry even though the sun is going down
  火金姑會來作伴
Because fireflies will keep them company
  恁阿爸去走船仔 到宕還未看到影
Your dad goes sea fishing and we have no clue where he is
  日頭落山你免著驚
But don’t worry even though the sun is going down
  漁船啊會看到後山的形影
Because the ship will be guided by the silhouette of the Back of Taiwan

  後山的山一直站在這
The mountain back of Taiwan always stands here
  看著世間的變化 聽著海湧的聲
Watching the world changing, hearing the sound of waves sweeping
  後山的山勇敢站在這
The mountain back of Taiwan bravely stands here
  就算作風颱落大雨 伊嘛攏不驚
Even though typhoons come with hard rain, she is never afraid
  後山的山永遠站在這
The mountain back of Taiwan stand here forever
  祖先在這的打拼 伊攏有在看
The hard work of ancestor is all seen by her
  後山的山一直站在這
The mountain back of Taiwan always stands here
  它是咱的靠山 咱就要疼惜這粒山
She is our backing, and we should cherish her

  草仔青青花正香
Plants are flourishing and the flowers are scenting just now
  路邊的草蜢擱勒弄雞公
A grasshopper on the roadside is playing tricks on a rooster
  黯淡的路哪沒人照顧
On the dark road, if no one goes along with you
  月娘光光會來照路
Chang’e will shine and show you the way
  天黑黑就要落大雨
The sky is getting darker and it’s going to rain
  世間的變數是天在發落
Vicissitudes are punishment meted out by God
  樹仔大叢根若大箍
If the tree is huge and the rootstock is thick
  子孫仔就免驚大風甲大雨
Then posterity won’t be afraid of strong winds and hard rain

  ※註: 由於英文中沒有「後山」一詞,加上我寫翻譯盡量以情境而非字面解釋為主要考量,我的英文翻譯歌詞中,「後山」並沒有固定。
※P.S. Since that there no a word corresponding to “houshan” in English and that, rather than literal meaning, the atmosphere is the main consideration when I write translation, I don’t use a certain word to act as the translation of the word “houshan” in my English translation.

By the way, in the original text, “月娘” literally means the goddess representing the moon. It took me a lot of time to make a decision between “Luna” and “Chang’e.” I’m not sure whether it would be easier to understand the atmosphere if I used “Luna,” but I think it is Chang’e that matches the image the lyrics gives.
